The History of Trucking (Picture Show)
But once in a while we come across a video we think just has that perfect mix of simplicity, nostalgia, quality and relevance to truckers across the nation. This is one of them. It’s a collection of old photographs of trucks, rest stops, fuel islands and drivers from early on in the history of trucking. Most of these photos are from the National Archives in Washington D.C., but some are obviously straight out of some family photo books.

“Every crash, and every fatality and injury, suffered on our nation’s highways is a tragedy… It is also tragic that carriers and drivers across this country are saddled with guilt and blame for many crashes they could do nothing to prevent.”
Here is a summary of the ATA’s report:
University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI): UMTRI is a leader in truck-related crash research. The highlighted study assigns driver factors to 8,309 fatal car-truck crashes as a proxy for fault.
• Car drivers were assigned factors in 81% of crashes versus 27% of truck drivers •
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA): Tasked with “reducing deaths, injuries and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes,” NHTSA has undertaken extensive research on the topic. Their 2003 study assigned causal driver factors in 10,092 fatalities.
• Cars were assigned driver factors in 91% of head-on crashes, 91% of opposite-direction sideswipes, 71% of rear-end crashes, and 77% of same-direction sideswipes
AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety: The foundation’s mission is “to identify traffic safety problems, foster research that seeks solutions and disseminate information and educational materials.” This study, one of over 250 projects they’ve funded to discover the causes of crashes, examined 10,732 fatal accidents.
• 36% of car drivers were cited for two or more unsafe acts • 11% of truck drivers were cited for two or more unsafe acts
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA): FMCSA is the primary regulating agency for the trucking industry whose stated mission is “to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.” Two studies are noted below.
Annual Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts: Cites driver factors in 6,131 car-truck fatal crashes
• 2007: 85% of cars were assigned driver factors versus 26% of trucks • 2008: 85% of cars were assigned driver factors versus 26% of trucks • 2009: 81% of cars were assigned driver factors versus 22% of trucks
The Truck Safety Coalition cited the following statistics:
Council et al. (2003) found that in all crashes between trucks and light vehicles, trucks were more likely to be the “contributor” to the crash than light vehicles by 48 percent to 39 percent, and trucks were more responsible than light vehicles in backing, rear-end, right-turn, left-turn, and sideswipe collisions;
Preusser (1994) found that nonfatal lane change crashes on the Washington, D.C. Interstate Capital Beltway were twice as likely to be the result of a tractor-trailer changing lanes rather than a light vehicle lane change;
Wolfe and Carsten (1986) found equal apportionment of fault assignment in nonfatal crashes, but car drivers were assigned fault 3 times as often as tractor-trailers drivers, overwhelmingly on the basis of surviving truck driver claims; and,
Shao (1986) studied highway interchange crashes and found that truck drivers were primarily responsible for the majority of these collisions.
Man dies after jumping from highway overpass into trucker's windshield in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS • A man died after jumping from an overpass into traffic near the Interstate 55 and Interstate 44 split early Friday, landing in the windshield of a tractor-trailer. The trucker was hurt, but not seriously.
It happened at about 8:30 a.m. on Interstate 44 at Lafayette Avenue, police said. A tractor-trailer driver, 47, was heading west on I-44 near the split to southbound I-55 when he saw a pedestrian jump off the Lafayette Avenue overpass.
Capt. Garon Mosby of the St. Louis Fire Department said the 24-year-old man was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead there. He had jumped into the windshield of a moving truck, Mosby said.
Police were not releasing the man's name Friday, saying he had not been "positively" identified.
The truck driver was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. As workers tended to him at the scene, the trucker has a bloodied face but was able to walk to the ambulance and speak to paramedics. There was a large hole in the upper half of the driver's side of the windshield.
The incident involved a tractor-trailer with markings of Beelman Trucking Co. out of East St. Louis.
The overpass the man jumped from was unclear at first. Authorities say a caller told 911 it happened near a pedestrian overpass marked with the South Seventh Street exit sign, but later police were focusing on an overpass at Lafayette Avenue and putting up crime scene tape there.
The Missouri Department of Transportation said it happened in the left lane of southbound I-55, near the split with Interstate 44. Police temporarily shut down both highways so crews could clear the scene and investigators could do their work.
Video: Trucks Collide in Fiery Wreck on I-65
Fire crews were called to the bridge Thursday afternoon with the fire still roaring and traffic slowed to a complete stop.
Police have released no information on the wreck, other than that one person is confirmed dead. The person's name was not released.
Scanner reports soon after crews responded on scene indicated there was some kind of flammable materials in own of the trucks, perhaps barrels of oil and grease, though that information has not been confirmed by police.
Based on images from the scene, it appears one truck rear-ended the other. The front door of the first truck was open minutes after the crash, though it's unclear if the driver managed to escape before the flames broke out.
The northbound side of the bridge is expected to remain closed until Friday at the earliest. Traffic will be diverted away from the crash site.

Growing up in a trucking family, I know that for some, trucking is a love/hate profession. My dad always said he loved his job but hated being away from us, but I know there’s not another job in the world he would have ever wanted.

This video was recorded in Long Island, New York on Meadowbrook State Parkway. NMA419′s video description said that he knew something was “about to happen” so he started recording. Minutes later, the truck slammed into an overpass.
NMA419 said he pulled over to make sure the driver was okay– He was, although his ego was a little shattered.
You’re a good man, NMA419, for pulling over to check on the driver!
Video: Giant Dump Truck Takes Police on a Chase
Tales like these, no matter how old, never die. It’s something that you have to see to believe. If your in the trucking industry, especially around this kind of equipment, you’ll understand the magnitude of the situation first hand.
After stealing a 53 ton, $700,000 giant dump truck, a man took police on a wild goose chase. Actually more like a wild elephant chase.
It’s not your typical stolen vehicle, and police officers are unable to use all their typical tactics. The tires are too big to be affected by spike strips, and the truck is just too heavy to be pushed by the officer’s cruisers.
After chasing him for 4 hours, at 35 miles per hour, eventually the driver runs out of gas. Obviously not a great idea to steal a giant dump truck and take officers for a ride, but his driving skills were commendable — no one was injured, he didn’t even get into an acciden
Video: Truck Goes Over Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Recovery Mission Underway
Sad news to report.
This morning, a truck plunged over the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.
According to WAVY, response boats and crews with Navy Special Warfare Command are at the scene. A tow line has been attached to the truck to keep it from drifting.
Battalion Chief Amy Valdez of the Virginia Beach Fire Department told WAVY that the truck went over the bridge near mile marker 15. At this time, it is unclear what caused the accident.
Only one person was believed to have been in the truck at the time of the crash.
“The driver was heavily entangled in the truck’s wreckage underneath the water,” NBC Washington reported.
At this time, the recovery mission is still underway.
No further information is being released at this time.

Video: Trucker Being Called A Hero For Crashing Rig To Save Bikers
The incident occurred on Monday morning on I-5 in Seattle.
Truck driver Ashton Hoopes was driving on I-5 when a Volvo cut him off, forcing him to hit the median.
Hoopes, an Army reservist, was hauling a load of dirt when the Volvo cut him off. He said there was nowhere for him to go– his only option was to hit the barrier or hit a pair of motorcyclists. With no regard for his own safety, he chose to hit the barrier.
“I was like, here is my only choice, to hit Jersey barricade so I don’t hit anybody,” Hoopes told KOMO.
His truck slammed into the concrete barrier, causing it to explode into flames.
Hoopes, still worried about the bikers, kicked open the door to his mangled cab and went to look for the bikers.
He found a man nearby. ”I was like, ‘Did you see a guy on a bike?’ He said, ‘It was me. Thank you. If you hadn’t hit the wall, I would be dead,’” Hoopes told KOMO.
Thanks to Hoopes selflessness and quick thinking, no serious injuries were reported. Hoopes walked away from his mangled and blazing truck and only suffered a separated shoulder.
Troopers are looking for the silver Volvo involved in the incident.

She was treated for head and jaw contusions on the scene of the accident, and was taken to the hospital for possible head trauma.

Obviously this would never happen in the U.S., nor are we condoning such activities (It’s quite idiotic). Guess the saying “Only in Russia” really applies here.
Route 24 'horror show' for truckers
So far this year, there have been eight accidents involving tractor-trailers on Route 24, including an accident a week ago that killed 32-year-old Stephanie Picher of Raynham. Speeders blamed for many of the serious accidents on highway
Truck driver Joe Woodard has more than 2 million commercial miles under his belt over his 35-year career, but one road often stands out – Route 24 in Massachusetts, which is “by far one of the most dangerous highways I’ve ever traveled.”
Other drivers – and several recent accidents – back him up.
So far this year, there have been eight accidents involving tractor-trailers on Route 24, including Monday’s accident that killed 32-year-old Stephanie Picher of Raynham.
Since January, the 41-mile road that stretches from Fall River to Randolph has seen rollovers, jackknifes, lost loads and a massive fire after a truck carrying 11,000 gallons of gasoline crashed and caught fire.
“It’s a horror show. It’s terrible,” said Woodard, 58, of Weymouth, who was sitting in his Stop & Shop truck at the service plaza in Bridgewater recently. “There’s nothing that would surprise me out here.”
The roadway has been the scene of dozens of accidents the past two years, prompting a crackdown in the summer of 2012.
But why is it so bad? Woodard said you can’t always blame the road.
Woodard, who has driven all over the country, said motorists drive more aggressively on Route 24 than in other parts of the state, which is a main reason for the accidents.
“Speed is the biggest factor. The cars are speeding down the highway. People aren’t paying attention. They’re texting, they’re talking on their phones. And then they get into a situation where they can’t react fast enough to avoid it,” he said.
Jim Parker, owner of the Parker Professional Driving School in Avon, said he tells his students to be weary of how fast drivers travel on Route 24, which is not a federally designated roadway because of its imperfect design.
“One of our trucks will be doing 55 to 60 and people are going by you like you’re parked,” Parker said. “I think that they travel too fast down Route 24. We explain excessively that you could be the best driver in the world but it’s the people around you.”
Russ Hussey, 59, of Swansea, is not a truck driver and said he drives down Route 24 once or twice a week for work.
“Today (in the afternoon) you could go out there and drive 75 if you want. In the morning or coming home you have to drive 75. You have to drive with the traffic and that’s what the traffic is going,” Hussey said.

I went with one of the teachers from my yoga studio to Blue Osa. I figured it would be an adventure and not a luxury spa vacation, and I was right. Our teacher turned our trip into a magical experience which I will treasure for the rest of my life. I will say that the lack of hot water, or consistent water for that matter was really disappointing, and Aaron's reactions to some of the complaints from our group was uncaring and unkind. Paul and Marie were amazing, as were the rest of the Blue Osa staff...wish there had more vegetarian friendly foods, but again, my trip was magic thanks to Marco.

Procession of big rigs, hundreds of mourners for weighmaster who was killed
ESTACADA, Ore. -- More than a hundred truck drivers created a mile-long procession Saturday morning to honor the inspector killed last week in a cruel murder.
Grady Waxenfelter, a weighmaster for Clackamas County, was murdered when he pulled over a truck without license plates.
The suspect is still at large.
On Saturday, Grady's family and friends gathered for a private memorial service in Estacada.
Before the service, more than a hundred men and women drove their big-rig trucks from Oregon City to Estacada as a special tribute to Grady with a police escort.
Many of the drivers only knew Grady from his work as a weighmaster.
He was the inspector who'd check their trucks for violations in Clackamas County.
"I want to show support to his family. He didn't deserve what we got. He was a well-liked man. He did his job and got along with most everybody," said a trucker who hauls logs.
"I've been through some of his inspections. He was an awesome guy. He was more than fair," said a man who drives a dump truck.
"I liked Grady. I used to pull over when he was inspecting trucks just to talk to him. Everybody liked him. We're here to show respect," said another trucker who hauls logs.
In life, these drivers share a professional and sometimes prickly relationship with inspectors like Grady.
"He inspected me a couple of times," said another truck driver, waiting to climb into his rig for the procession. "It's funny because we don't want to see him. He's like an enemy to us. He didn't deserve what he got, by no means."
The procession included dump trucks, cement trucks, fire trucks, moving trucks, tow trucks, trucks that haul logs, trash, rocks, and more.
From the first to last, the trucks took 10 to 15 minutes to pass.
There is a $7,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.

For the vast majority that, and the company of good friends, was enough. But for too many others, the name of the game was to drink to the point of oblivion.
The Noughties will be remembered for terrorist attacks, war, recession and the continued rise of binge drinking.
The latter was all too evident on the streets of our cities as young drinkers ushered in a new decade
in the only way they seem to know.
For one, the beginning of 2010 came and went face down in a snow-covered street in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Three friends unsuccessfully tried to help the paralytic woman, wearing a mini-skirt and heels, to her feet.
Elsewhere in the town, bonhomie was suspended when a man pulled off his shirt to square up to another man wearing a Santa hat.

What's worse than a bad tattoo? These mistakes are going to hurt long after the ink heals.
That truck driver you flipped off? Let me tell you his story.
Let me tell you a little about the truck driver you just flipped off because he was passing another truck, and you had to cancel the cruise control and slow down until he completed the pass and moved back over.
His truck is governed to 68 miles an hour, because the company he leases it from believes it keeps him and the public and the equipment safer.
The truck he passed was probably running under 65 mph to conserve fuel. You see, the best these trucks do for fuel economy is about 8 miles per gallon. With fuel at almost $4 per gallon -- well, you do the math. And, yes, that driver pays for his own fuel.
He needs to be 1,014 miles from where he loaded in two days. And he can't fudge his federally mandated driver log, because he no longer does it on paper; he is logged electronically.
He can drive 11 hours in a 14-hour period; then he must take a 10-hour break. And considering that the shipper where he loaded held him up for five hours because it is understaffed, he now needs to run without stopping for lunch and dinner breaks.
If he misses his delivery appointment, he will be rescheduled for the next day, because the receiver has booked its docks solid (and has cut staff to a minimum). That means the driver sits, losing 500-plus miles for the week.
Which means his profit will be cut, and he will take less money home to his family. Most of these guys are gone 10 days, and home for a day and a half, and take home an average of $500 a week if everything goes well.
You can't tell by looking at him, but two hours ago he took a call informing him that his only sister was involved in a car accident, and though everything possible was done to save her, she died. They had flown her to a trauma hospital in Detroit, but it was too late.
He hadn't seen her since last Christmas, but they talked on the phone every week. The load he is pulling is going to Atlanta, and he will probably not be able to get to the funeral.
His dispatcher will do everything possible to get him there, but the chances are slim. So he has hardly noticed your displeasure at having to slow down for him. It's not that he doesn't care; he's just numb.
Everything you buy at the store and everything you order online moves by truck. Planes and trains can't get it to your house or grocery store. We are dependent on trucks to move product from the airport and the rail yards to the stores and our homes.
Every day, experienced and qualified drivers give it up because the government, the traffic and the greedy companies involved in trucking have drained their enthusiasm for this life.
They take a job at a factory if they can find it, and are replaced by an inexperienced youngster dreaming of the open road. This inexperience leads to late deliveries, causing shortages and higher prices at the store, and crashes that lead to unnecessary deaths.

I went with one of the teachers from my yoga studio to Blue Osa. I figured it would be an adventure and not a luxury spa vacation, and I was right. Our teacher turned our trip into a magical experience which I will treasure for the rest of my life. I will say that the lack of hot water, or consistent water for that matter was really disappointing, and Aaron's reactions to some of the complaints from our group was uncaring and unkind. Paul and Marie were amazing, as were the rest of the Blue Osa staff...wish there had more vegetarian friendly foods, but again, my trip was magic thanks to Marco.

Remote Controlled Snow Plow (Video)
Imagine plowing a yard of snow in a short sleeve t-shirt with out ever stepping a foot outside. That’s what one RC hobbyist was able to do when he built this cool remote controlled big rig snow plow.
The mini snow plow was built by Aaron Bidochka and his team over at RCSparks.com. It took over 3 months to build and roughly $6000, and was made from miscellaneous parts as there was nothing like this around so the team had to come up with one from scratch.
Don’t let the size fool you, this thing is heavy duty. It weighs over 20 pounds and judging by the video does a damn good job cleaning up the snow in the yard.
Real cool, I know, unfortunately it’s not for sale and there is nothing else like it around.
